"Well, I haven't done a single thing to influence anyone for good or ill."
"You are wrong to think that influencing others is what gives importance to an action," said the Master.
"Well, then, what is it that gives importance to an action?"
"Doing it for its own sake with the whole of one's being. Then it becomes a nonprofit, godlike activity."

Karma Yoga, or Union with the Divine by Selfless Action (or, Work, Service), is one of four main paths of Divine Union. This does not conflict with other paths or ways of relating with G-D and our True Self. Indeed, to follow the path of Nondual Contemplation (Jnana Yoga), which is beyond the duality of action and non-action, does not mean one does not work, does not serve, does not take action. Rather, action leads into knowing our True Self, and in knowing our True Self, one can act from that Realizaton.
This action is done without a sense of separate-self doing the action. The action is done as worship. You do not attach to a goal for action. You simply do action in the moment, present and thankful to be able to offer action as devotion to G-D and our True Self.
The action can be for persons, oneself, an object, an animal – anything part of Nature. Serving my two doggies is a way I worship, engaging Union with G-D by action for their benefit and blessing. You may do this by caring for a garden or plant, or creature. A parent can do this in caring for a child or children. A person taking care of her yard is a means of Union with G-D, if she chooses it to be so.
Yet, key to this kind of Work is the releasing of the separate-self, and acting from Pure Awareness, as Being. If the “ego-sense” is working, this is not Devotional work, worshipful action. Yogic action, godly service, is Being at work in the world, Being serving.
